CHICAGO—The following statement was released by SEIU Healthcare Illinois President Greg Kelley in response to tonight’s election results:
“In Kwame Raoul, Illinois voters have elected a fighter who will hold elected officials accountable and advocate for working families.
“Kwame will exercise clear judgement as he seeks justice for crime victims even as he works to reform the criminal justice system to move towards focusing on policies that will make communities safer, rather than wasting lives and taxpayer dollars on imprisoning non-violent offenders.
“As a cancer survivor and healthcare advocate, Kwame will be a line of defense against Trump administration policies of cutting Medicaid and attempts to further weaken the Affordable Care Act.
“A child of Haitian-born immigrants, Kwame Raoul knows the bitter taste of Trump-styled attacks that attempt to dehumanize people who simply are seeking a better way of life.
“As a state senator, Kwame led the way as a champion for fair wages and good benefits, safer working conditions and workplace protections, equitable school funding, criminal justice reform, and equal rights for women — including the right to make their own health care decisions.
“As attorney general, Kwame will continue to protect Illinois.”
