SEIU Healthcare Illinois Statement on 5th Ward Aldermanic Election Results 

Greg Kelley, President of SEIU Healthcare Illinois, issued the following statement upon the news of Desmon Yancy winning the election for alderperson of Chicago’s 5th Ward:

“Desmon Yancy’s win today is a win for working families. A longtime South Shore resident and grassroots  community organizer, Desmon has proven his commitment to economic justice and protecting the rights of working people. Just last week, he stood by our members’ sides demanding livable wages for Northwestern Memorial Hospital workers – and we know he’ll continue to champion working people as alderperson of Chicago’s 5th Ward. As co-founder of the Grassroots Alliance for Police Accountability (GAPA) and the Empowering Communities for Public Safety coalition (ECPS), we also know that Desmon will fight to ensure communities have a voice in public safety, address the root causes of crime, and strengthen police accountability to the communities they serve. SEIU Healthcare Illinois is proud to congratulate Desmon on his victory and is excited to work together to make Chicago a better place for the next generation.”
