Our Growing Movement this May Day

May Day 2017 (5)

On this International Workers’ Day, workers across the country are building a growing movement for respect and dignity on the job. From Starbucks to Amazon, we see workers rising up and demanding their seat at the table to use their voices and power to improve their workplaces.

We know from history that these movements and moments come with great sacrifice. The fight for justice is rarely easily achieved, but it is so worth the struggle.

We can think back to May 1, 1886, when immigrant workers across the United States went on strike to win an 8-hour workday. 10-16-hour days were standard at the time, as were injury and death on the job in some industries. The stakes were high, but tens of thousands knew that without taking action nothing would change.

I cannot help but see parallels with what our members and fellow essential workers across the country have experienced during the pandemic. The risk of exposure shared with workers and our families back home, the lack of access to adequate protective equipment and paid sick time, coupled with employers refusing to provide financial incentives like pandemic pay or bonuses pushed so many to say, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

The pandemic raised the stakes for essential workers, and members of our union met the moment with courage, perseverance, and a thirst for justice.

I am proud of the fights we’ve waged and the stronger movement we have built through this struggle.

Our work is not done, but like those immigrant workers who walked off the job in 1886, we know that our greatest strength lies in building power through joining together across our differences. No matter where we are from or what we look like, by uniting we can take the reins and start rewriting the rules for a better future.

This International Workers’ Day, let us reflect on the sacrifices those made before us and the struggle we have endured together over the last two years, and recommit to the vision we have for a society defined by freedom and justice where we can all have quality education, healthcare and jobs, and live full and plentiful lives of our choosing.
