As we come to the close of another year, it’s hard to believe that we are still fighting the battle that COVID unleashed on the world almost 2 years ago. Although, my disbelief is quickly transformed by the tremendous pride I feel in knowing that our union has met the challenges of this pandemic, head on, and emerged with countless victories. We refused to stand by to wait for an unforeseen outcome. We pulled ourselves out of the trenches and did what we do best. We organized.

The year began as we hosted 10 town hall meetings featuring public health officials, frontline doctors and even a US Senator, to provide valuable resources and education on life saving vaccines. Over 11,000 HCIIMK workers reported they were vaccinated with over 1,300 members joining the ranks over the following months. During the month of February, over 400 workers were successfully navigated to vaccination sites in the city, in a single day. Our “My Vaccine Story” videos were shared on our social media channels and garnered over 296,000 views.

Despite the obstacles that attempted to derail our progress, we joined together and channeled our “fighting” spirit. As a result, 2021 was filled with wins. The number of contracts we successfully bargained and the raises that we negotiated were impressive, even in an environment that didn’t threaten physical limitations and harm. To achieve these milestones during a time of great sacrifice and uncertainty, is truly remarkable.

One of the most inspirational moments for me this year, was traveling to Washington DC with our members as they lobbied for the passing of the Build Back Better Act. Hundreds of members flooded the Capitol demanding investment in home care and child care services and rallied for the support of care workers that have been undervalued for far too long.

As a result of the strength and support of our collective union, our members stood ready and empowered. They stood out from the masses by using their outspoken voices to ask difficult questions of our legislators while demanding accountability.

It became quite clear to me in this moment that the conclusion of 2021 is not an ending but just the beginning of the work that lies ahead. I witnessed firsthand, our members laying the groundwork for the building blocks of 2022. As I looked over the sea of workers and recognized that regardless of where they were from or what they did for a living, they were valued and part of a growing movement that is building a future bigger and bolder than ever imagined.

I am looking forward with hope and optimism that in 2022 we will use our past successes as building blocks to launch into a greater tomorrow.

Más Grande y Valiente. . . Construyendo Sobre Nuestro Éxito

Ahora que llegamos al final de otro año, es difícil creer que todavía estemos luchando la batalla que COVID desató en el mundo hace casi 2 años. Aunque mi incredulidad se transforma rápidamente por el tremendo orgullo que siento al saber que nuestra unión ha enfrentado los desafíos de esta pandemia, de frente, y ha salido con innumerables victorias. Nos negamos a quedarnos parados a esperar un resultado imprevisto. Salimos de las trincheras e hicimos lo que mejor sabemos hacer. Nosotros organizamos.

El año comenzó con la celebración de diez reuniones públicas en las que participaron oficiales de salud pública, médicos de primera línea e incluso un senador de los EE. UU., para brindar información y recursos valiosos sobre las vacunas que salvan vidas. Más de 11,000 trabajadores de HCIIMK reportaron que fueron vacunados y más de 1,300 miembros se unieron a las filas durante los meses siguientes. Durante el mes de febrero, más de 400 trabajadores fueron trasladados con éxito a los sitios de vacunación de la ciudad, en un solo día. Nuestros videos de “My Vaccine Story” se compartieron en nuestros canales de redes sociales y obtuvieron más de 296,000 vistas.

A pesar de los obstáculos que intentaron descarrilar nuestro progreso, nos unimos y canalizamos nuestro espíritu de “lucha”. Como resultado, 2021 estuvo lleno de victorias. La cantidad de contratos que negociamos con éxito y los aumentos que negociamos fueron impresionantes, incluso en un ambiente que no amenazaba con limitaciones físicas ni daños. Lograr estos hitos en un momento de gran sacrificio e incertidumbre es verdaderamente extraordinario.

Uno de los momentos más inspiradores para mí este año fue viajar a Washington DC con nuestros miembros mientras presionaron para que se aprobara la Ley Build Back Better. Cientos de miembros inundaron el Capitolio exigiendo inversiones en servicios de cuidado infantil y cuidado en el hogar y se unieron para el apoyo de los trabajadores de cuidado que han sido devaluado durante demasiado tiempo.

Como resultado de la fuerza y el apoyo de nuestra unión colectiva, nuestros miembros se mantuvieron preparados y empoderados. Se destacaron entre las masas al usar sus voces francas para hacer preguntas difíciles a nuestros legisladores mientras exigían responsabilidad.

En este momento me quedó bastante claro que la conclusión de 2021 no es un final, sino solo el comienzo del trabajo que tenemos por delante. Fui testigo de primera mano, cómo nuestros miembros sentaron las bases para los bloques de construcción de 2022. Mientras miraba por encima del mar de trabajadores y reconocía que, sin importar de dónde sean o qué hacían para ganarse la vida, eran valorados y formaban parte de un movimiento creciente que está construyendo un futuro más grande y valiente de lo que jamás se había imaginado.

Espero con esperanza y optimismo que en 2022 utilicemos nuestros éxitos pasados como pilares para lanzarnos a un mañana mejor.
