Sherry Golden’s Report from the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Assassination

When I heard that Missouri SEIU members were going to Memphis to participate in events for the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, I knew I had to go.

I wanted to be a part of history.

We were joined by people from all over the country to celebrate the life and legacy of an incredible leader. It was so inspiring to see people from all different races, backgrounds, and ages come together to remember Dr. King — it’s exactly what he would have wanted.

One of the most touching moments of the day was when several of the sanitation workers from the 1968 strike joined the crowd. It was inspiring to hear from people who stood on that strike line right next to Dr. King 50 years ago.

I was so moved by the events of the day. This is the type of experience that I cannot wait to tell my grandkids about someday.
