Poor People's Campaign Kicks off in Illinois & Missouri
In 1968, Martin Luther King started a Poor People’s Campaign to end poverty. Today, 50 years later, SEIU members, faith leaders, and community members are renewing the fight. We’re fighting so home care, child care, hospital, and nursing home workers don’t have to live in poverty. We’re fighting for a $15 minimum wage and stronger unions.
In state capitols and workplaces across the country, SEIU members, faith leaders, and community allies are speaking out to end poverty and racism.
Today, in Springfield, IL, home care worker Gail Hamilton is speaking out against Gov. Rauner’s veto of a $15 minimum wage bill (SB 81) and his attacks on her union.
Today, in Ferguson, MO, family members of nursing home residents will are being joined by faith leaders and community leaders to call on Christian Care Nursing Home to settle a fair contract with their workers. Workers have been on strike for over two months.
Both workers and residents at Christian Care are almost exclusively African-American, and they see their fight for quality care and for dignity and respect to be a fight for the dignity and fair treatment of all Americans.
