On Official Juneteenth Holiday, Union Members, Elected Leaders and Community Groups Speak Out and Caravan in Recognition and Celebration of “Freedom Day”
Black and Brown Workers Speak Out on the Need for the Freedom of Living Wages, a Voice on the Job, and the Right to Organize in a Union
CHICAGO—Hundreds of union members will be joined by elected leaders and community groups for a press conference, car caravan and celebratory rally in honor of “Freedom Day”— on the date that Juneteenth will be celebrated as an official holiday in the City of Chicago, and across the nation.
Speakers will testify to the significance of the occasion—marking the date when enslaved workers in Texas were actually freed more than two years after the emancipation proclamation. Workers, elected leaders and community allies will call for the living wages, voice on the job, and right to organize a union required for workers, especially Black and brown workers, to truly achieve freedom today.
A press conference, car caravan complete with decorated float, and celebratory rally, all marking and celebrating Juneteeth while calling for the living wages, workplace rights, voice on the job, and community investment needed to achieve true freedom and racial equity today.
Speakers to include: Alderman Sophia King, State Representative Lamont Robinson, State Representative Kam Buckner
